The month of August will sizzle with the opening of Diablo
Light Opera Company's STARS 2000 production of SOME LIKE IT
HOT! (a.k.a. SUGAR). This upbeat musical is taken from the
popular movie starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn
Monroe. The music was written by Jule Styne, also known for
such musicals as FUNNY GIRL and GYPSY; lyrics by Bob Merrill
known for such musicals as CARNIVAL and TAKE ME ALONG.
As the show opens we meet Joe and Jerry, two down and out
musicians, who unfortunately witness the St. Valentines Day
massacre. In order to hide from the mob, they disguise themselves
as women and join an all girls orchestra. One can only imagine
the problems that can occur as Joe and Jerry meet Sugar, the
innocent and beautiful band's singer. Surprises aboud! Romance,
laughter and music are in the air as this hilarious musical
unfolds.
Mark Cornfield will direct with Diane Kamrin on board as
choreographer and vocal director. This team has produced several
successful musicals together for STARS 2000, including FIDDLER
AND THE ROOF and HELLO DOLLY! The double cast production includes
Allison Naylor and Ginny Wehrmeister as Sugar, Woodie Petrie
and Rob Peterson as Joe, and Chris Boccard and Stephen Kling
as Jerry.
This "not to be missed" musical opens in the Margaret
Lesher Theatre at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the
Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek, on August 6th and continues
for eight performances closing on August 15th. Ticket are
$8.00 for students, seniors and groups and $10.00 for general
admission.
This musical promises to be fun for the whole family with
romantic ballads, wonderful ensemble numbers and tap dancing
gangsters!
