‘Impossible Dream’ Continues
‘Man of La Mancha” Journeys Into Antioch’s El Campanil Theatre March 29, 30
Following a successful 19-performance run in Walnut Creek, the Diablo Light Opera Company (DLOC) takes its production of “Man of La Mancha” to Antioch on March 29 and 30.
Performances will be at 2 pm. and 8 p.m. on March 29 and 2 p.m. on March 30 in the El Campanil Theatre, 602 West Second Street in Antioch’s historic downtown area.
Tickets ($27-$30) are on sale at the box office, (925) 757-9500 or online at www.elcampaniltheatre.com. Youths between the ages of 12 and 17 will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult paid ticketholder.
A talented cast of 17 that won generous applause and standing ovations from audiences in Walnut Creek will re-enact the story of the classic novel “ Don Quixote.” It is presented as a play within a play, performed by Miguel de Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.
Paul Myrvold stars as Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote, the role that earned Richard Kiley a Tony Award in the Broadway production in 1965. The show itself was awarded a Tony for best musical.
The show in Antioch will mark the eighth time Myrvold, whose credits include appearances off-Broadway, and on-Broadway in “Shenandoah,” has played the lead role. Prior to his Walnut Creek performance earlier in March, he had played the role in a production by The Western Stage, the Salinas Valley’s public theater in 2002.
Melinda Meeng, whose last appearance with DLOC was in “The King and I” in 2004, will play Aldonza. She has performed with Center Repertory Company, 42nd Street Moon, and The Willows Theatre Company. Her performance in Contra Costa Musical Theatre’s production of “South Pacific” earned her a Shellie Award in 2006.
The role of Sancho will be played by Robert Ponce, who has performed with numerous companies during a career spanning more than 35 years. He is also a costume designer.
Dianna Shuster, former artistic director of American Musical Theatre of San Jose and Music Theatre of Oregon, directs the show. She previously directed DLOC’s production of “My Fair Lady.”
Daren A. C. Carollo, DLOC’s executive producer, is the show’s producer. Cheryl Yee Glass will conduct the orchestra. The choreographer is Suzanne Brandt. Chad Runyon is the vocal director.
