Title
: 'Millie' gets modern feel

DIABLO LIGHT OPERA Company (DLOC) opened a fast-paced enjoyable "Thoroughly Modern Millie" this past weekend at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts (DLRCA).

Well directed by Ryan Weible, it features the thoroughly charming Brandy Collazo as Millie, with a vibrant Matthew Brandon Hutchens as the street-wise Jimmy Smith. James Fouchard's towering skyscrapers, beautifully lit by Kurt Landisman, set the scene for Millie's journey to New York City.

It's 1922 and, while it might be prohibition, the music is flowing as the Jazz Age brings a whole new sound to the country. Sheri Stockdale brings out the excitement of the time with her energetic choreography expertly executed by the spirited ensemble while Cheryl Yee Glass makes the music come to life with her talented 16-member orchestra.

There are so many standouts in this cast that it's impossible to mention them all. I would be remise, however, if I didn't applaud Melynda Kiring as a dazzling Muzzy Van Hossmere and Cynthia Myers in a wonderfully funny turn as the mysterious Mrs. Meers. In fact, Myers' songs with Michael Cabanlit (Ching Ho) and Austin Ku (Bun Foo), complete with sub-titles, are the funniest in the show. Also noteworthy are Angelique Lucia (you may remember her as Eliza in DLOC's "My Fair Lady") who uses her incredible voice to portray Miss Dorothy Brown and Eric Neiman as the oh-so-efficient and very funny Trevor Graydon. Kudos also to the stage crew that keeps the action moving as they seamlessly change locales.

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" continues through Nov. 4. Call 925-943-SHOW.
