I had a chance to see two excellent productions
last week at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts
in Walnut Creek. Friday night we saw Tennessee Williams' Night
of the Iguana.
At the Hoffman (his spelling) Theatre is a delightful
musical, Me and My Girl. The show, which kept up British spirits
in the dark days of WWII, is full of great songs and very
funny bits. Jeff Seaberg and Terry Darcy-D'Emidio are both
reprising their roles from 1991 for Diablo Light Opera Company.
When I saw the show back then, I was knocked out by the possibilities
of community theater. It is easily one of the most entertaining
evenings you could spend in any theater, anywhere in the country.
Jeff Seaberg is as funny a physical comedian as I've ever
seen. His business with a crown and cape is laugh-out-loud
hilarious. Terry Darcy-D'Emidio plays his girlfriend Sally
Smith with charm and pluck. She is graced with a fast vibrato
that makes her singing voice sound courageous and vulnerable
at the same time. These two are perfect in their roles.
Donna Turner is delicious as the naughty Lady
Jaqueline. One of the highlights of the show is during the
show-stopping song, "The Lambeth Walk." Director Rhoda Klitsner
has the cast venture into the aisles, grab various members
of the audience and dance with them. Everybody gets to be
a part of the fun!
