Showcase for Bay Area Talent
Diablo Light Opera's Teen Performers Group Will Present
Sondheim's 'Into the Woods'
Stars 2000 Teen Theater, the Diablo Light Opera Company's
group of aspiring performers from throughout the Bay Area,
will showcase their talents in the Broadway musical "Into
the Woods," for eight performances beginning July 30.
The show will be presented in the performing arts center
at Diablo Valley College, 321 Golf Club Road, Pleasant Hill,
at 2:30 and 8 p.m. on July 30 and 31, and August 1, 5, 6.7
and 8. Tickets ($13 for adults, $11 for students and seniors,
$10 groups of 15 or more) are on sale at (925) 798-1300.
"Into the Woods" is composer Stephen Sondheim's
musical involving classic fairy tale characters (Cinderella,
Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack of beanstalk fame)
who meet up with a baker and his wife. What follows is their
journey into the woods with discoveries that are often frightening
and at other times wonderful.
The Stars 2000 production will feature a double cast of
39 performers directed by
Ryan Weible, a graduate of Northgate High School in Walnut
Creek and former member of the company who is now working
on Broadway.
Weible, 26, starred in the Stars 2000 production of "Hello,
Dolly!" in 1997. While completing studies in theater
at San Diego State University, he directed the company's
productions of "Grease" and "How to Succeed
in Business Without Really Trying."
Two weeks after graduating from college, Weible taught
drama at San Ramon Valley High School.
On Broadway, Weibel was assistant director for Larry Kramer's
"The Normal Heart" at the Public Theatre in New
York. He also worked on Stephen Sondheim's revival of the
musical "Assassins" and directed the New York
premiere of "Games People Play," a new work by
Scott Weston.
